Broccoli is a widely popular vegetable in the United States, but it can only thrive in temperate climates with cool summers. Due to this restriction, 90 percent of the broccoli consumed in the U.S. is grown in the cooler areas of California, located on the West Coast. It then has to be transported about 4,000 kilometers across the country to reach consumers on the East Coast. This situation, however, may soon change. Scientists are working on developing a new variety of broccoli that can be cultivated on the East Coast despite the region’s warmer summers, offering several possible benefits.

Firstly, growing broccoli locally on the East Coast and delivering it to nearby stores could reduce costs for consumers. Transporting broccoli from California takes several days and incurs significant transportation costs. By producing broccoli closer to the market, transportation costs would be lowered, allowing stores to sell broccoli at a reduced price.

Secondly, the new variety of broccoli is likely to be more appealing to consumers than some other newly developed crops. Scientists are using traditional crossbreeding methods to create this broccoli, selecting plants with traits such as heat tolerance. Unlike genetically modified crops—like some varieties of squash and maize—which have sparked controversy among consumers, the new broccoli does not involve genetic modification, so it is less likely to be met with opposition.

Finally, vegetables are at their most nutritious when eaten soon after harvest, as they retain more of their vitamins and nutrients. The longer it takes for vegetables like broccoli to reach consumers, the more nutrients they lose. Locally grown broccoli can reach East Coast residents more quickly, making it a healthier option compared to broccoli shipped from California.
