TOEFL Speaking Task 2 Practice Test #3
Instructions
You will read a short passage and listen to a conversation on the same topic. You will then be asked a question about them. After you hear the question, you will have 30 seconds to prepare your response and 60 seconds to speak.
The question for TOEFL Speaking Task 2 is almost always the same: The woman (or man) expresses her opinion about the proposal described in the letter. Briefly summarize the proposal, then state her opinion and explain the reasons she gives for holding that opinion. This format stays consistent across tests.
Reading Passage
Proposal for a Student-Run Snack Shop
I strongly believe that the university should consider opening a student-operated snack shop on campus. A student-run snack shop would bring two key benefits to the university community. First, it would create valuable job opportunities for students, providing them with a chance to earn some extra money while gaining real-world work experience. Second, having a snack shop on campus would offer students a quick and convenient place to grab food during their busy days, ensuring they donβt have to leave campus in search of a snack. It would be a perfect solution for those in need of a quick energy boost between classes.
Best regards,
Julia Newton
Listening
Narrator: Now listen to two students discussing the letter.
Woman: Did you see Juliaβs letter?
Man: Yeah, I did.
Woman: And?
Man: Iβm all for it.
Woman: Yeah?
Man: Yeah, jobs like that provide students with great work experience, experience they can use in the real world.
Woman: Like what?
Man: Well, I mean, basically, theyβd be running a business. Theyβd learn how to do it allβmake up staff schedules, keep track of inventory, order supplies, make sure the building is maintained β¦
Woman: Yeah, I guess you could learn a lot.
Man: Yeah, stuff you can really use when you graduate. Especially if youβre thinking of starting your own business.
Woman: OK, yeah, I can see that. But her second point doesnβt make a lot of sense to me. I mean, we have a nice cafeteria. Whatβs wrong with eating there?
Man: Well it is a nice cafeteria. But sometimes the lines are really long, and you just donβt have time to wait.
Woman: Yeah, thatβs true.
Man: Especially if all you want is like a cup of coffee, or a quick sandwich or something.
Woman: Thatβs true. But if you have a car β¦
Man: Yeah, if you have a carβwhich a lot of students donβtβyou can drive to one of the stores in town. But still, the closest oneβs like a fifteen-minute drive, so round-trip it takes at least a half an hour.
Woman: And thatβs time you could use for studying.
Man: Exactly.
