TOEFL Reading Practice Test #31 - Changing Environments and Cultural Adaptation in Mesolithic Scandinavia
The Mesolithic period in Europe (approximately 8000 B.C. to 2700 B.C.) marks a transitional phase linking Ice Age societies to later Neolithic developments. This period was characterized by continuous adjustments to environmental transformations following the last glacial period, around 12,500 years ago. In Scandinavia, three major phases of Mesolithic culture are identified. The Maglemose Phase (7500–5700 B.C.) was defined by seasonal settlements along rivers and lakes, with people engaging in both fishing and terrestrial hunting. During the Kongemose Phase (5700–4600 B.C.), settlements shifted primarily to coastal areas near bays and lagoons, where inhabitants exploited both land and marine food sources. Many Kongemose sites were notably larger than those from the Maglemose period. The Ertebølle Phase (4600–3200 B.C.) marked the peak of Mesolithic cultural complexity in southern Scandinavia.
By the Ertebølle Phase, communities had established permanent coastal settlements, depending on an extensive variety of food sources, including forest game, migratory birds, shellfish, sea mammals, and various fish species from both shallow and deep waters. Smaller, seasonal coastal sites were also used for specific activities like hunting migratory birds or deep-sea fishing. One such example is the Aggersund site in Denmark, which was inhabited briefly each autumn as people gathered oysters and hunted migratory swans. The technological advancements of the Ertebølle people far surpassed those of earlier Mesolithic groups. They developed a broad range of specialized tools made from bone, wood, and antler, including equipment for waterfowl hunting and sea-mammal capture. They also constructed dugout canoes reaching up to ten meters in length.
A shift toward more settled lifestyles brought evidence of growing social complexity, as seen in the use of cemeteries for burials and evolving burial customs. These shifts indicate increasing resource intensification among these relatively affluent hunter-gatherers around 3000 B.C. The expansion of food sources included an increased reliance on marine life, careful harvesting of migratory birds, and large-scale shellfish collection. This intensification coincided with the development of more sophisticated tools, greater exchanges of materials between groups, and more diverse settlement types. Population levels also gradually increased across southern Scandinavia. These trends may have been partly influenced by rising sea levels, which forced some groups to adapt as formerly habitable areas became submerged. Additionally, distinct regional variations in artifact styles suggest that different groups occupied clearly defined territories and possibly competed over resources.
Mesolithic cultural patterns were less distinct in other parts of Europe, partly because climate variations were not as pronounced as in Scandinavia, and there were fewer opportunities for coastal adaptation. In central Europe, settlements were mainly found along rivers and lakes, separated by dense forests. Many Mesolithic lakeside communities were strategically positioned at the intersection of different environments, allowing for a return to a reliable base where inhabitants could fish year-round. They also made seasonal excursions to gather resources such as forest game. Archaeological evidence suggests that some groups spent much of the year at settlements along the Danube River before relocating in the summer to camps near lakes. In regions such as Spain, Mesolithic populations expanded their reliance on both marine and forest resources. Across much of Europe, diets became increasingly diverse as communities sought alternative food sources, including those requiring more complex processing.
