The TOEFL iBT Write an Email task gives you 7 minutes to write an email in response to a realistic situation. You may be writing to a friend in a social setting or a professor, advisor, department chair, editor, or another professional in an academic or workplace setting.

Each prompt includes three specific points that you must address. A high-scoring response answers all three points clearly, uses an appropriate tone for the recipient, and develops each idea with relevant details.

• Read the prompt carefully. Make sure you respond to all three bullet points.
• Use an appropriate tone. Be friendly when writing to a friend, but polite and professional when writing to university staff or other professionals.
• Organize your email naturally. Include a greeting, a short introduction, one paragraph for each main idea, and a brief closing.
• Add relevant details. Explain your ideas with examples or reasons instead of giving one-sentence answers.
• Use a variety of grammar and vocabulary. Mix simple and complex sentences, and avoid repeating the same words.
• Leave time to proofread. Check for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and missing words before time runs out.
