TOEFL Speaking Task 2 Practice Test #33

TOEFL Speaking Task 2 Practice Test #33

Instructions

You will read a short passage and listen to a conversation on the same topic. You will then be asked a question about them. After you hear the question, you will have 30 seconds to prepare your response and 60 seconds to speak.

The question for TOEFL Speaking Task 2 is almost always the same: The woman (or man) expresses her opinion about the proposal described in the letter. Briefly summarize the proposal, then state her opinion and explain the reasons she gives for holding that opinion. This format stays consistent across tests.

Reading Passage

Pay Theater Assistants

At present, the student assistants who help with campus play productions are volunteers who are neither paid nor fully trained. I recommend that the theater department pay these assistants and provide them with specialized training. From my experience in campus productions, relying on volunteers does not work well because they often arrive late for rehearsalsβ€”or miss them entirelyβ€”and they lack sufficient knowledge of stage equipment. Paying assistants would motivate them to be more reliable, and with proper training, they would be able to operate the equipment more effectively.

Sincerely,
Vivian Nguyen

Listening

Narrator: Now listen to two students discussing the letter.

Student 1: Hey Dan, what do you think of this letter? Do you think it would…

Student 2: Help? Oh, definitely. The problem is that student assistants often have other jobs to earn money, so those always take priority.

Student 1: What do you mean?

Student 2: Well, one of my friends worked as a production assistant for a show last year. He missed a rehearsal one night because his boss at his other job told him he had to stay late. He didn’t have a choice.

Student 1: Hmm. So if he had been paid for the show…

Student 2: Then he wouldn’t have needed the other job. Helping with the play would have been his main responsibility.

Student 1: I guess. That makes sense. But what about the training? Is that really necessary?

Student 2: Absolutely. The equipment assistants use now is much more complicated than it used to be. You really need proper training to avoid mistakes.

Student 1: Yeah, especially during the performance.

Student 2: Having someone experienced show them step by step how to operate the latest equipment would not only improve their skills but also make the plays run much better.
