TOEFL Speaking Task 2 Practice Test #29

TOEFL Speaking Task 2 Practice Test #29

Instructions

You will read a short passage and listen to a conversation on the same topic. You will then be asked a question about them. After you hear the question, you will have 30 seconds to prepare your response and 60 seconds to speak.

The question for TOEFL Speaking Task 2 is almost always the same: The woman (or man) expresses her opinion about the proposal described in the letter. Briefly summarize the proposal, then state her opinion and explain the reasons she gives for holding that opinion. This format stays consistent across tests.

Reading Passage

Lunchtime Student Concerts

Next semester, the music department will launch a series of free lunchtime concerts featuring student performers. These concerts will take place once a month in the lounge of the music building. The series will showcase a variety of musical styles, including classical, jazz, and popular music. According to Vanessa Norton, chair of the music department, the concerts will offer valuable experience by allowing music students to perform in front of live audiences. During the ten-minute intermission, students attending the concerts will be able to enjoy a selection of free snacks.

Listening

Narrator: Now listen to two students discussing the article.

Man: Hey, Molly. You play the violin, right? Did you see this article in today’s paper?

Woman: Yeah. And I’m looking forward to it. I really want to participate.

Man: Sounds like fun.

Woman: Yeah, and it’s a great opportunity, because each of us learns to play a lot of different pieces. But right now, there’s only one concert at the end of the year where students perform, so we usually get to play just one piece there.

Man: You’re left having learned a lot of material that you never actually get the chance to perform.

Woman: Right. So it would be great to have more chances like this.

Man: I see your point.

Woman: I also like the idea about the food, because a lot of people will probably be squeezing the concert in between classes, so they won’t have time to eat lunch before or after.

Man: That’s true, especially since the music building is way off by itself at the far end of campus, not close to any dining halls or the student center.

Woman: Yeah, it’s at least a fifteen-minute walk, so this way people would still have something to eat. It’s a really good idea.
