TOEFL Speaking Task 2 Practice Test #23

TOEFL Speaking Task 2 Practice Test #23

Instructions

You will read a short passage and listen to a conversation on the same topic. You will then be asked a question about them. After you hear the question, you will have 30 seconds to prepare your response and 60 seconds to speak.

The question for TOEFL Speaking Task 2 is almost always the same: The woman (or man) expresses her opinion about the proposal described in the letter. Briefly summarize the proposal, then state her opinion and explain the reasons she gives for holding that opinion. This format stays consistent across tests.

Reading Passage

Let Students Use Laptops During Class

Even though many students own laptops, we’re still not allowed to use them during class, and I believe this rule should be changed. Most students can type faster than they can write by hand, which means using a laptop to take notes would be quicker and would help us stay more focused during lectures. On top of that, laptops allow us to access the Internet, so professors could have us look up helpful information or browse images and websites related to the lecture. This would deepen our understanding of the material and make the learning experience more engaging.

Sincerely,
Vincenzo Nayar

Listening

Narrator: Now listen to two students discussing the letter.

Woman: Did you see this letter in the paper?

Man: Yeah, but I don’t think it’s a good idea.

Woman: Why not?

Man: Well, ’cause I think students would pay even less attention to the professor not more. I think they’d be too much of a distraction.

Woman: How so?

Man: Well, maybe some students would actually use laptops to take notes.

Woman: I would.

Man: OK, you would. But a lot of people, most people would be too busy playing around with them instead. You know, surfing the Internet, e-mailing friends, playing computer games, that kind of stuff.

Woman: Huh. So you really think they’d pay less attention?

Man: Yeah, really, I think that’s what would happen.

Woman: Alright. But what about her second point? Don’t you think if students had them in class, professors would be able to use the Internet as a teaching tool?

Man: The problem with that is that not everyone has a laptop computer. Only some people have one.

Woman: True.

Man: So you see not everyone would be able to follow along. It wouldn’t be useful as a teaching tool if only some students could follow along, but not others.

Woman: I see what you mean.
