TOEFL Speaking Task 2 Practice Test #12
Instructions
You will read a short passage and listen to a conversation on the same topic. You will then be asked a question about them. After you hear the question, you will have 30 seconds to prepare your response and 60 seconds to speak.
The question for TOEFL Speaking Task 2 is almost always the same: The woman (or man) expresses her opinion about the proposal described in the letter. Briefly summarize the proposal, then state her opinion and explain the reasons she gives for holding that opinion. This format stays consistent across tests.
Reading Passage
Making Professor Evaluations Public
The university currently requires students to complete written evaluations for their professors at the end of each course. However, the current system is private, as only professors read these evaluations after submission. I propose that the university publish these evaluations online for everyone to see. By doing so, both professors and students would benefit. Professors would be encouraged to enhance their teaching if they knew their course evaluations were publicly available. In addition, prospective students could read the evaluations and make more informed decisions about which classes to take.
Sincerely,
Victor Nelson
Listening
Narrator: Now listen to two students discussing the letter.
Man: Did you see this?
Woman: Yeah, but I don’t think it’ll work.
Man: Why not?
Woman: Well, I don’t think professors would be too happy to have their teaching styles publicly criticized, Besides, they might not even bother reading the online evaluations if they think there will be negative criticism in them.
Man: You really think that will happen?
Woman: Sure. And so the professors won’t take them seriously or be influenced in any way. Nothing’s going to change.
Man: OK, but at least students who might take their courses in the future would read them.
Woman: That’s true. But students who write the evaluations usually do it on the last day of class, and they’re all in a hurry to leave. They don’t wanna bother spending much time on them, so they don’t say anything specific or helpful about the professor or the course.
Man: I see what you mean.
Woman: So this whole idea may not work at all.
