TOEFL Reading Practice Test #17 - The Functions of Pollinators in Agriculture

Pollinators, which include bees, butterflies, birds, and bats, play a critical role in agricultural ecosystems by transferring pollen between flowers. This process, known as pollination, enables plants to reproduce by facilitating the fertilization of their seeds. Approximately 75% of the world’s crops depend on animal pollination to some degree, making pollinators indispensable for global food production. Crops such as apples, almonds, coffee, and tomatoes owe their yields to the diligent work of pollinators. Without them, the production of many fruits, nuts, and vegetables would significantly decline, affecting both human diets and economies.

Bees, particularly honeybees and native bee species, are among the most important pollinators due to their efficiency and adaptability. Honeybees, managed by beekeepers, are often transported to different regions to pollinate crops during specific seasons. Meanwhile, wild bees, including bumblebees and solitary species, often pollinate plants that honeybees cannot access. However, the contributions of other pollinators, such as butterflies and birds, should not be overlooked, as they assist in pollinating plants that bees may ignore.

Despite their importance, pollinator populations are under threat worldwide. Factors such as habitat loss, pesticide use, climate change, and diseases have caused significant declines in pollinator numbers. Habitat destruction, for instance, eliminates the flowering plants that pollinators depend on for food, while pesticides can poison pollinators directly or disrupt their navigation systems. These threats not only jeopardize pollinator survival but also put food security and agricultural stability at risk.

Efforts to conserve pollinators focus on creating pollinator-friendly habitats, reducing pesticide use, and fostering awareness about their ecological role. Farmers can plant wildflower strips near their crops to provide a reliable food source for pollinators. Similarly, adopting sustainable agricultural practices can reduce harmful impacts on pollinator health. By protecting pollinators, humans ensure the resilience of both natural ecosystems and agricultural systems.
