TOEFL Reading Practice Test #16 - The Formation and Impact of Glaciers

Glaciers are massive, slow-moving bodies of ice that form in regions where snowfall exceeds melting over extended periods. Found primarily in polar regions and high-altitude mountains, glaciers play a significant role in shaping the Earth’s surface and maintaining ecological balance. Their immense weight and slow movement have powerful effects on the landscapes they encounter. It begins when layers of snow accumulate and compress under their own weight, eventually transforming into dense ice. This gradual compression can take decades or even centuries, depending on the climate and snowfall rates. Over time, gravity pulls these ice masses downhill, carving valleys and sculpting landscapes through a combination of erosion and deposition. The interaction between the glacier and the underlying rock often creates distinctive features that last long after the ice has retreated. The results are landforms such as U-shaped valleys, fjords, and moraines, which serve as visible evidence of a glacier’s passage. These formations provide valuable information to geologists studying past environmental conditions.

During the last Ice Age, glaciers covered about 30% of the Earth’s surface, influencing global climates and ecosystems. Their expansive presence affected weather patterns and sea levels on a global scale. Today, they account for roughly 10% of the land area, primarily in Antarctica and Greenland, but their impact remains substantial. Glaciers are a critical freshwater reservoir, containing nearly 70% of the world’s freshwater. They also regulate sea levels, as their melting contributes to global sea-level rise. However, glaciers are sensitive indicators of climate change. As global temperatures rise, many are retreating at unprecedented rates, raising concerns about water availability and the loss of unique habitats that depend on glacial meltwater.

Scientists have studied glaciers not only for their role in Earth’s physical geography but also for the ancient climate records preserved within their ice layers. These records, known as ice cores, contain trapped air bubbles that provide valuable information about atmospheric composition and temperature fluctuations over hundreds of thousands of years. By analyzing ice cores, researchers can reconstruct past climates and predict future trends, offering critical insights into how the planet’s climate system operates.

Despite their significance, glaciers face numerous threats. Climate change poses the most pressing challenge, as warming temperatures accelerate melting and reduce their overall mass. In addition, human activities such as mining and tourism can further destabilize glacier ecosystems, sometimes causing irreversible damage. Understanding and preserving these icy landscapes is essential, not only for their ecological and hydrological importance but also for the insights they offer into Earth’s history and future.
