NEW TOEFL Reading Academic Passage #7 - Linguistic Diversity [Passage]

Linguists estimate that there are approximately 7,000 languages currently spoken worldwide, though this number is difficult to determine precisely due to debates about what constitutes a distinct language versus a dialect. This linguistic diversity is unevenly distributed. Papua New Guinea, a country of only about nine million people, is home to over 800 languages. In contrast, vast areas of North America, Europe, and Northern Asia have relatively few languages despite large populations and geographic areas.

This diversity faces an existential threat. Researchers predict that between fifty and ninety percent of currently spoken languages will become extinct by the end of this century. Language death typically occurs when younger generations stop learning their ancestral language and shift exclusively to a dominant language like English, Mandarin, Spanish, or Arabic. This shift often happens because speakers perceive economic, educational, or social advantages in abandoning minority languages. In some cases, government policies have actively discouraged or prohibited minority language use, accelerating the decline.

The loss of a language represents more than just the disappearance of words and grammar rules. Each language embodies unique ways of categorizing and understanding the world. Some languages have elaborate vocabularies for concepts that other languages express simply or not at all, reflecting the specific environment and cultural priorities of their speakers. When a language dies, unique knowledge about local ecology, traditional medicine, oral history, and cultural practices often dies with it, as this knowledge is deeply embedded in linguistic structures and may not translate fully into other languages. While language change and evolution are natural processes, the current rate of language extinction is unprecedented and primarily driven by political and economic pressures rather than natural linguistic evolution.
