NEW TOEFL Reading Academic Passage #3 - Sleep Research [Passage]

For decades, scientists believed that sleep was simply a passive state of rest, a time when the body and brain were inactive. Modern research has dramatically revised this understanding. Sleep is now recognized as an active process involving complex neurological activity that is essential for numerous physiological and cognitive functions.

Sleep occurs in cycles, each lasting approximately ninety minutes and consisting of several stages. The first stages involve light sleep, during which the body begins to relax and brain activity slows. This is followed by deep sleep, characterized by very slow brain waves. The final stage of each cycle is REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, during which the brain becomes highly active, similar to waking states, though the body remains largely paralyzed. Most dreaming occurs during REM sleep. As the night progresses, the proportion of time spent in REM sleep increases while deep sleep decreases.

The functions of sleep are multiple and vital. During deep sleep, the body repairs tissues, builds muscle, and strengthens the immune system. Sleep also plays a crucial role in memory consolidation. Studies show that information learned during the day is processed and transferred from short-term to long-term memory during sleep, particularly during REM stages. Sleep deprivation impairs cognitive function, emotional regulation, and physical health. Chronic lack of sleep has been linked to increased risk of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and even shortened lifespan. Despite spending roughly one-third of our lives asleep, we are only beginning to fully understand why sleep is so indispensable.
