TOEFL Academic Discussion Writing (Task 2) – Practice Test #008

TOEFL Integrated Writing Instructions

This TOEFL Writing Task 2 (Academic Discussion) practice test offers a realistic experience with a genuine prompt featuring a professor’s question and responses from two classmates. Follow the instructions closely to simulate the exam conditions. After writing your response, you can submit it for feedback or choose to order a written assessment or video call session to review your writing in detail.

TOEFL Academic Discussion Task Detailed Instructions

  1. Read the Prompt Carefully: Pay close attention to the professor’s question and understand the topic being discussed. What are the two positions presented on the issue? In some cases, the two sides may disagree on the nature or cause of the problem itself. In other cases, they might agree on the problem but propose different solutions or approaches to address it. This will guide your response and ensure that you stay on topic.
  2. Consider Different Perspectives: Reflect on the responses from the two classmates provided in the prompt. Think about how their viewpoints relate to the professor’s question and how you can add to the discussion.
  3. Express Your Opinion: Clearly state your opinion on the topic. Make sure to support your viewpoint with relevant reasoning, examples, or personal experiences to strengthen your argument.
  4. Make a Unique Contribution: Go beyond summarizing the responses of the classmates. This is the main difference between the TOEFL Integrated Writing Task 1 and the new Academic Discussion task. In the older task, you were expected to remain completely unbiased and objective, simply reporting what you read and heard. In contrast, the new task asks you to participate in the discussion by offering your own opinion. Try to contribute something original to the conversation. You can share a new idea, extend one of the points made, or provide a relevant example. This demonstrates your ability to think critically and engage thoughtfully with the topic.
  5. Organize Your Response: Structure your post with a clear introduction, body paragraph(s), and a conclusion. This will help your ideas flow logically and enhance the readability of your response.
  6. Stay Within the Word Limit: Ensure your response contains at least 100 words. This helps you develop your ideas in enough detail to meet the expectations of the task. While 100 words is the minimum, it is often not sufficient to fully explain your position, provide examples, and respond meaningfully to the other students’ comments. Do not feel limited by the word count. Aim to express your opinion clearly and support it with relevant reasoning or personal experience. Personally, I usually end up writing around 200 words when responding to this task, as that length allows me to build a well-structured and thoughtful response without running out of time.
  7. Submit your writing: Use the form below to privately submit your writing for review, or post it publicly in the comment section at the bottom of the page. Posting publicly encourages an organic “Academic Discussion,” allowing other site visitors to join in, respond to your ideas, and share their own perspectives.
  8. Feedback (optional): Order detailed written analysis or a video session to review your response using the official TOEFL writing criteria and identify specific areas for improvement.

Big Brother

TOEFL Academic Discussion Writing (Task 2) Practice Test #008: Big Brother

Academic Discussion

Professor: “In modern society, debates about censorship are becoming increasingly polarized. Some believe that censoring harmful or misleading information is necessary to protect public safety and maintain social harmony. Others argue that any form of censorship, whether by governments or private entities, is a violation of free speech and personal liberties. In your view, to what extent should censorship be used to limit harmful content, and where should we draw the line between protecting society and preserving individual freedoms?”

Benito: “I believe that censorship is essential in maintaining social order and protecting individuals from harmful content. Without government regulation, people can easily be misled by false information, which could cause chaos or even violence. Censorship allows us to filter out harmful, hateful, or misleading content that could harm society. There are some things that people shouldn’t be allowed to see, hear, or read because they have no value and could be dangerous. The government has a responsibility to protect its citizens, even if it means restricting certain freedoms for the greater good.”

Vahid: “I’m totally against censorship of any kind. Once you give governments the power to control what people can and cannot say, there’s no telling where it will end. It’s not just about stopping “harmful” contentβ€”it’s about silencing dissent and controlling the narrative. Benito’s argument assumes that the government always knows what’s best for society, which is a dangerous assumption. If we go down that path, eventually, we’ll lose our freedom to think and speak independently. After all, if only the original creators of ideas could use them, nothing would be left, since someone before us has already said or created something. Who gets to decide what’s harmful, anyway? That’s why I think censorship is not only a bad idea but a huge threat to democracy and individual rights.”

Your Response

Sample Response #1 (Excellent)

Censorship is a highly debated issue, with arguments both for and against it often rooted in concerns about public safety and individual freedoms. While Benito believes that censorship is necessary to filter harmful or misleading content, Vahid takes a strong stance against any form of censorship, emphasizing its threat to free speech and personal autonomy. I agree with Vahid’s point that censorship can easily become a tool for controlling public discourse. Once governments or other powerful entities have the authority to decide what information is acceptable, there is a risk that they will use this power to suppress not just harmful content but also viewpoints they disagree with. This slippery slope can lead to a society where free expression is severely limited, which undermines democratic values. While some regulation of content might be needed to prevent direct harm, I believe that open dialogue and the free exchange of ideas are crucial for a healthy, functioning society. Limiting speech, even in the name of safety, can have dangerous long-term consequences.

Sample Response #1 - Examiner Comments

This response presents a well-rounded discussion of the topic, engaging with both Benito’s and Vahid’s viewpoints while also adding original analysis. The writer effectively explores the dangers of censorship while acknowledging the rationale behind regulating harmful content. The argument is logical and cohesive, and the vocabulary is varied and appropriate for the context. This is a strong, high-level response because it adds depth to the discussion, provides clear reasoning, and demonstrates a solid understanding of the complexities of censorship.

Sample Response #2 (Competent)

I agree with Vahid that censorship is dangerous because it can be used to control what people say and think. Even if the government is trying to protect people, they shouldn’t get to decide what information is good or bad. People need to be able to hear all sides of an issue, even if it’s uncomfortable or controversial. At the same time, I understand why Benito thinks that some content needs to be censored, like hate speech or dangerous misinformation. But overall, I think censorship can be a slippery slope, and it’s better to have more freedom of speech, even if it’s not perfect.

Sample Response #2 - Examiner Comments

This response provides a clear opinion on censorship and addresses both sides of the argument. However, the analysis lacks depth, and the ideas are not as fully developed as in the high-level response. The writer touches on the main points but doesn’t provide detailed reasoning or specific examples to support their argument. The vocabulary is straightforward, and while the response is clear, it could benefit from a more in-depth exploration of the topic and stronger engagement with both Benito’s and Vahid’s arguments.
