TOEFL Speaking Task 3 Practice Test #24
Instructions
You will read a short academic passage (usually about a concept from psychology, biology, business, etc.), and then listen to part of a lecture in which a professor explains the same concept using one or more examples. After that, you will be asked a question that connects the reading and the lecture. You will have 30 seconds to prepare and 60 seconds to speak.
The question for TOEFL Speaking Task 3 typically asks you to explain how the example (or examples) from the lecture illustrate the concept described in the reading. In your response, briefly summarize the concept from the reading and explain how the professorβs example helps to clarify or demonstrate it. This format is consistent across tests.
Reading Passage
Integrated Farming
Some farmers combine the raising of animals with crop cultivation, creating a mutually beneficial relationship between the two. While certain farmers treat animal husbandry and crop production as distinct activities, others choose to integrate them. This method, known as integrated farming, takes advantage of the natural behaviors of animals to promote the health and growth of both crops and livestock. By pairing specific animals with particular crops, farmers establish a system in which both elements support one anotherβs needs, enhancing the overall productivity and sustainability of the farm.Listening
Narrator: Now listen to part of a lecture from an Environmental science class.
Professor: OK, so an example of this is when chickens are used to prepare a field for planting. Farmers who do this have a special kind of little house that they keep their chickens in. This little house has four walls and a roof, but it doesn’t have any floor. And it has wheels attached to it, so it can easily be moved from one location to another. So, farmers move this little house to a field where something is going to be planted, say bean plants, and then the chickens are placed inside the house. Now remember there’s no floor in this house, and what the chickens do is they walk around inside the house and peck at the soil, and eat any weeds or wild plants that they find. And then when the chickens are done eating the weeds in that location, the farmers move the house to the next section of the field. And again the chickens peck at the soil and eat the weeds. So the chickens get to eat lots of weeds, which are good for them. Now this activity is also good for the bean plants that’ll be growing in the field. Because when the chickens eat the weeds, they’re improving the quality of the soil. Thanks to the chickens, when the bean plants start to grow, there won’t be any weeds there to compete with them for crucial resources, like sunlight and water.
