TOEFL Speaking Task 3 Practice Test #11
Instructions
You will read a short academic passage (usually about a concept from psychology, biology, business, etc.), and then listen to part of a lecture in which a professor explains the same concept using one or more examples. After that, you will be asked a question that connects the reading and the lecture. You will have 30 seconds to prepare and 60 seconds to speak.
The question for TOEFL Speaking Task 3 typically asks you to explain how the example (or examples) from the lecture illustrate the concept described in the reading. In your response, briefly summarize the concept from the reading and explain how the professorβs example helps to clarify or demonstrate it. This format is consistent across tests.
Reading Passage
Optimal Foraging
Food serves as the primary source of energy for animals, enabling them to sustain vital functions. However, the process of acquiring foodβknown as foragingβalso entails an expenditure of energy. To maximize survival efficiency, many animals adopt strategies that minimize the energy they expend during foraging while simultaneously enhancing the nutritional value of their food intake. This strategy, referred to as optimal foraging, involves selecting food sources that offer the highest nutritional return for the least energy investment. Through this energy-efficient behavior, animals ensure they consume prey or resources that provide essential nutrients with minimal energetic cost.Listening
Narrator: Now listen to part of a lecture from a Biology class.
Professor: All right. So I’ve got a good example of this. There’s a bird, a species of crow that lives near the water. And it feeds on a type of shellfish that has a hard outer shell. In order to eat the shellfish, the bird has to crack open its hard shell. So, when this bird feeds, what it does is it dives down out of the air into shallow water, grabs a shellfish in its mouth, then carries the shellfish up in the air. It then drops the shellfish, lets it fall onto the rocks below. When the shellfish hits the rocks, its shell cracks and splits open and the bird can eat it. Now this bird, this crow doesn’t just swoop down, grab the first shellfish it sees and then fly up to any height and let it fall. Instead, it does two things. First, it carefully selects only the biggest shellfish. That means it’s going to get the biggest possible meal for its efforts. OK. Second, it carries the shellfish up to a specific height, about five meters, and drops it from there. If the bird dropped the shellfish from a lower height, it would have to pick it up and drop it too many times in order to break the shell. On the other hand, if the bird carried the shellfish up to a higher altitude, an altitude higher than is necessary to crack the shell, it’d be wasting energy. So this bird expands just the right amount of energy, no more, no less, that it needs to obtain just the right kind of food.
