TOEFL Speaking Task 3 Practice Test #10
Instructions
You will read a short academic passage (usually about a concept from psychology, biology, business, etc.), and then listen to part of a lecture in which a professor explains the same concept using one or more examples. After that, you will be asked a question that connects the reading and the lecture. You will have 30 seconds to prepare and 60 seconds to speak.
The question for TOEFL Speaking Task 3 typically asks you to explain how the example (or examples) from the lecture illustrate the concept described in the reading. In your response, briefly summarize the concept from the reading and explain how the professorβs example helps to clarify or demonstrate it. This format is consistent across tests.

Procedural Memory
The types of memories individuals form when acquiring names and facts are distinct from those associated with learning to execute a task. These task-related memories are referred to as procedural memories. Procedural memories pertain to the cognitive processes involved in carrying out specific actions, which eventually become automatic through repetitive practice. Once a task is repeated frequently, procedural memories are consolidated, enabling individuals to perform the task effortlessly. These memories allow for the execution of the action without conscious effort, and the ability to retrieve the memory remains intact, even after prolonged periods.Listening
Narrator: Now listen to part of a lecture on this topic from a Psychology class.
Professor: I’ve experienced this kind of thing myself. When I was a boy, I took guitar lessons. And in my first lessons, my guitar teacher… She showed me how to hold the guitar and how to place my fingers on the strings. Every day when I got home, I would play the guitar for hours. And after a couple years spending time like this playing at home, I could just pick up my guitar and play music without thinking about it. But after college, I stopped playing, and for years I never played or even picked up a guitar. Then the other day, I found my old guitar. I was amazed to discover that when I picked it up, I knew how to play, even though I hadn’t played in years. I just picked it up and right away, I found that I still knew where to press my fingers to play the right notes. Now, I couldn’t explain to you exactly how I was moving each finger, or exactly why I had to press the string at one point and not another, but I could still play my favorite songs.
