Sample High-Level Responses

Here are sample responses to the 4 speaking task 1 questions found in the 4 practice tests in The Official Guide to the TOEFL iBT, Seventh Edition, which is exactly the same as the 6th edition. Good job, ETS, really outdid yourselves with that one. Seriously, a round of applause for not updating the questions. These responses have been curated and edited by me and generated using the AI voice generator, ElevenLabs.

These high-level responses are based on the official speaking rubrics and examiner comments in the book, with two responses for each question, representing both positions. It doesn’t matter which side the speaker takes, as long as the response is well-organized, clear, and supported by relevant details or examples. The key is presenting ideas logically, regardless of the position. Some responses are slightly shorter or longer than 45 seconds.

TOEFL Practice Test 1, Speaking, Task 1 Prompt

Some students would prefer to live with roommates. Others would prefer to live alone.

Which option would you prefer and why?

TOEFL Practice Test 1, Speaking, Task 1 Responses

Response #1 (prefers to live alone):

Personally, I would prefer to live alone, mainly because of privacy and control over my environment.

First of all, having my own space allows me to focus better on my studies. For example, when I lived with a roommate in my first year of college, it was hard to concentrate because he often had friends over or played music while I was trying to study.

Secondly, I enjoy having control over my daily routines. With a roommate, you sometimes have to compromise on things like cleaning schedules or sleep times, which can be stressful.

So, while having a roommate might be more social or cost-effective, for me, the benefits of privacy and personal freedom make living alone the better option.

Response #2 (prefers to live with roommates):

Personally, I would prefer to live with a roommate, mainly because of the social support and the chance to share responsibilities.

For instance, when I lived with a roommate during my first year of university, it made the transition to college life much smoother. We helped each other with assignments, shared groceries, and even reminded each other of important deadlines. It felt like a built-in support system.

Also, having someone around makes everyday life more enjoyable. Whether it’s just chatting after class or cooking together, it adds a sense of connection that you don’t get when living alone.

So overall, I think the combination of companionship and shared responsibility makes living with a roommate the better option for me.

TOEFL Practice Test 2, Speaking, Task 1 Prompt

Some people who unexpectedly receive a large amount of money spend it on practical
things, while others spend it for pleasure only.

Which do you think is better and why?

TOEFL Practice Test 2, Speaking, Task 1 Responses

Response #1 (prefers to spend money on practical things):

Personally, I think it’s much wiser to spend unexpected money on practical things because it can have a lasting impact on your life.

Let’s say I received a large sum of money—rather than spending it all on vacations or shopping, I’d use it to pay off student loans or invest in something that improves my future, like professional courses or even starting a small business. That way, the money doesn’t just disappear—it becomes a tool for growth and stability.

Sure, it’s tempting to splurge a little, and I think it’s healthy to enjoy a small portion of it, maybe go out for a nice dinner or buy something fun. But overall, using the money in a thoughtful, practical way creates long-term value that can make a real difference later in life.

Response #2 (prefers to spend it on fun things):

Honestly, I’d rather spend unexpected money on things that bring joy. Life is stressful and often too focused on responsibilities. So if I got a big sum of money out of nowhere, I’d probably use it for experiences I’ll remember.

For example, I might take a trip I’ve always dreamed of or treat my family to something special. These moments create memories and happiness that no investment account can match.

And honestly, practical things will always be there. You’ll always have bills or expenses. But a surprise like this feels like a once-in-a-lifetime chance to enjoy something just for the sake of living. So, for me, spending it on pleasure isn’t irresponsible. It’s a way to celebrate life.

TOEFL Practice Test 3, Speaking, Task 1 Prompt

Some students prefer to work on class assignments by themselves. Others believe it is
better to work in a group.

Which do you prefer? Explain why.

TOEFL Practice Test 3, Speaking, Task 1 Responses

Response #1 (prefers to work alone):

Personally, I prefer working on class assignments by myself because it helps me stay focused and gives me full control over the outcome.

First, I concentrate better when I’m alone. There are fewer distractions, and I can work in silence without being interrupted or needing to wait for others to agree on decisions. That kind of focus really improves the quality of my work.

Second, working alone gives me complete control over how I organize my time and approach the assignment. For example, I can start early, take breaks when I want, and make sure everything is done exactly the way I like it, without depending on others to do their part.

Response #2 (prefers to be a part of a group):

I prefer working in a group because it allows for idea sharing and makes the workload easier to manage.

First of all, when I collaborate with others, I get exposed to different perspectives. People bring unique experiences and insights that can improve the overall quality of the assignment. For example, during a group presentation last semester, one teammate suggested using a real-life case study to support our argument, which made our work more convincing and engaging.

Also, group work lets us split up the responsibilities based on our individual strengths. If someone’s good at design and another person is better at writing, each person can focus on what they do best. This not only saves time but also reduces stress because we don’t have to handle everything alone.

So overall, I find group work more efficient and often more enjoyable than working solo.

TOEFL Practice Test 4, Speaking, Task 1 Prompt

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
It is important to learn about other cultures.
Use details and examples to explain your opinion.

TOEFL Practice Test 4, Speaking, Task 1 Responses

Response #1 (learning about other cultures is important):

I believe it’s crucial to learn about other cultures as it helps us become more empathetic and open-minded. By understanding different traditions and values, we develop respect for people from diverse backgrounds. For example, when I traveled abroad, I gained a deep appreciation for how different cultures prioritize family and community, which broadened my view on what’s important in life.

Additionally, in today’s interconnected world, cultural knowledge is essential for building relationships and succeeding in global environments. I’ve personally seen how understanding cultural differences can improve communication and teamwork, especially when working with people from various countries. This cultural awareness opens doors to new opportunities and enriches personal growth.

Response #2 (learning about other cultures is not important):

While learning about other cultures has some benefits, I don’t think it’s essential for everyone. Focusing on your own culture and values is just as important, as it builds a strong sense of identity. Personally, I’ve learned so much from my own traditions and how they shape the way I interact with others.

Moreover, in today’s globalized world, we often interact with people from various cultures naturally. I’ve worked with international colleagues and found that mutual respect and shared interests are more important than deep cultural knowledge. As long as we focus on what connects us, we can communicate effectively without needing to know everything about other cultures.

TOEFL Speaking Module Question Types Explained: Personal Preference

TOEFL Speaking Personal Preference Sample Questions

Tips & Preparation

What to do: For personal preference questions, focus on clearly stating your choice and supporting it with specific reasons and examples. Think about what aspects of your choice are most important to you and how they impact your daily life. Be honest and detailed in your response, and explain why your preference matters to you.

Tutor’s Advice: Keep your preparation plan focused on just 1-2 main elements. The question isn’t asking for a long list of reasons or things you like or dislike, it’s about developing a clear, well-supported response. You won’t have time to cover more than 1-2 points effectively. If you choose one main idea, you can expand on it with details and personal examples. If you choose two, keep each point concise and to the point.
Even if you don’t have a strong personal preference, consider the most common reasons why others might. For example, if the question asks whether you prefer living alone or with roommates, think about key factors like expenses, privacy, and social opportunities, as these are often the biggest deciding factors for most people.
It’s important to keep your response natural, simple, and clear. Avoid “sophisticated” language at all costs. Stop listening to the “experts” who say you need advanced vocabulary and grammar to get a good score. According to TOEFL’s official scoring rubrics, 75% of your score has nothing to do with vocabulary or grammar. Focus entirely on your message, clarity, and speaking confidently. Using overly complicated language will only distract you, make your message harder to understand, lead to more mistakes, and hurt your confidence because you’ll be stepping out of your comfort zone in an already stressful situation. If you want to practice with me, get an accurate estimate of your score, and refine your skills, feel free to schedule a session.

Example Topic: Do you prefer reading books or watching movies? Why?

Preparation Plan:
1. Depth of Detail
2. Imagination

Sample Response: “I prefer reading books over watching movies because books give me a deeper and more personal experience. Unlike movies, which have time limits and need to cut out details, books provide full descriptions of characters, settings, and events. For example, in the Harry Potter series, the books include rich details about the magical world that the movies simply don’t have time to show. Another reason I prefer books is that they let me use my imagination. When I read, I can picture the scenes and characters in my own way instead of relying on how a director presents them. This makes the story feel more personal and engaging. Movies can be fun, but they don’t give me the same level of depth and creativity that books do.”

Example Topic: Do you prefer to live alone or with roommates? Why?

Preparation Plan:
1. Privacy
2. Independence

Sample Response: “If I had the option to choose, I’d prefer to live alone because it gives me more privacy and independence. With my own space, I wouldn’t have to worry about noise or interruptions from roommates, which makes it easier to relax, focus on my studies, and get a good night’s sleep. I also wouldn’t have to share common areas like the kitchen or bathroom, so I could keep everything organized the way I like. Independence is another big advantage because I could set my own schedule, make my own decisions, and take care of my responsibilities without relying on others. For example, I wouldn’t have to adjust my routine to match a roommate’s schedule. Living alone would give me full control over my environment, making my daily life more comfortable, stress-free, and suited to my personal needs.”

TOEFL Speaking Opinion-Based Sample Questions

Tips & Preparation

Consider the implications of your viewpoint and how it aligns with real-life situations or experiences.
