NEW TOEFL Reading Academic Passage #2 - The Decline of Ancient Civilizations [Passage]

The collapse of complex civilizations is a recurring pattern in human history, yet each case presents unique circumstances. The Maya civilization of Central America, which flourished from approximately 250 to 900 CE, experienced a dramatic decline that has puzzled researchers for decades. At its peak, Maya cities featured sophisticated architecture, complex writing systems, and advanced mathematical and astronomical knowledge. Then, relatively suddenly, many of these urban centers were abandoned.

Early theories attributed the Maya collapse to a single catastrophic cause, such as foreign invasion or epidemic disease. However, modern archaeological and environmental research suggests a more complex picture. Evidence indicates that the Maya faced a combination of challenges including prolonged drought, environmental degradation from deforestation, soil depletion, and internal political conflict. The civilization’s success had led to population growth that eventually exceeded the land’s carrying capacity.

Importantly, the Maya collapse was not complete extinction. While many lowland cities were abandoned, Maya people and culture persisted in other regions. Some communities actually thrived after the classic period. This pattern challenges the notion of civilization collapse as a simple narrative of failure. Instead, it appears that complex societies undergo transformations in response to environmental, political, and social pressures. What we call “collapse” may sometimes be better understood as reorganization or adaptation, albeit often accompanied by significant population decline and cultural change.
